Madison is proud to announce the formation of a Brooklyn Chapter of the Achilles Track Club. The Achilles track club is a non-profit, worldwide, organization, whose mission is to enable people with all types of disabilities to participate in mainstream athletics, while promoting personal achievement, enhanced self esteem, and the lowering of barriers between people. It was started in 1983 by Dick Traum, the first amputee to run the NYC Marathon. Achilles offers people of all ages, from all places, with all kinds of physical disabilities the inspiration, training, technical expertise and resources to be able to participate in local and national running events including marathons. Runners participate with crutches, in wheelchairs, on prostheses, and without aids. Membership in Achilles is FREE and includes races, coaching, workouts, team T-shirts, and our newsletter, THE ACHILLES HEEL.
You can view more information about the organization at www.AchillesTrackClub.org.
Due to popular demand and easier accessibility, the Brooklyn chapter will now be meeting every Sunday at 10:00 AM in Prospect Park (instead of Marine Park). We meet at the Peristyle (the pillared structure) which is off of Parkside Avenue between Ocean Avenue and Coney Island Avenue—across from the Parade Grounds.
Whether your goals are to participate in a June 5 miler, or simply to have fun and exercise , come join us!! The sooner you do, the more fun, fitness and endurance you’ll have. Feel free to call or email us to let us know you’re coming (though it’s not necessary), for more information about the program, or to discuss any assistance you might need in order to participate.
