Are you noticing any numbness, tingling, or weakness stemming from your back into another portion of your body? If so, perhaps you are suffering from Radiculopathy. Radiculopathy is a condition due to a pinched or compressed nerve in one of the three segments of the back. The spine is broken down into the cervical spine (upper back/neck), thoracic spine (middle region) and lumbar spine (lower back). Radiculopathy is most commonly found in the cervical and lumbar region of the spine.

  • Cervical Radiculopathy occurs when one of the nerves in the cervical region becomes compressed. This can cause pain and loss of feeling along the nerves pathway into the arm and hand. This can stem from a ruptured disc, changes in the bones, arthritis or other injuries.
  • Lumbar Radiculopathy is caused by compression, inflammation or an injury to a nerve in the lower back. Lumbar Radiculopathy, like all the others, can cause pain, tingling or numbness in the thigh, calf and sometimes even the foot.
  • Thoracic Radiculopathy is less commonly found, but occurs when a nerve is pinched in the mid region of the back. This region controls muscles leading to the chest and abdomen, therefore can cause pain, numbness or tingling in those areas.
