Home Activities: Preventing Injuries
Whether you are playing sports or hard at work, it is important to be aware of potential injuries you can sustain and how to prevent them. While this is common knowledge, many people tend to overlook the risks involved in performing everyday activities around the home. From inanimate objects to family members, it is important to take note of the effect a specific action can have on your health. These preventive measures can provide you and your family with the peace of mind that everyone deserves to have.
One area where a lot of foot traffic occurs in the home is by the staircase. That’s why it is important to keep it clear of objects that could cause someone to trip or fall. While this is crucial to home safety, it won’t help if you can’t see where you’re going. Keeping your hallways and surrounding rooms well lit will decrease the likelihood of sustaining an injury.
Another area of the house that shouldn’t be taken for granted is the shower/bathtub. While bathroom falls are more common in children and older adults, anyone could lose their footing. To avoid this from happening, place a non-slip mat in the shower. If you need some additional help with maintaining your balance, a grab bar can help. You can use a grab bar to assist you in entering and exiting the bathtub.
While spending time with your kids and pets are always fun, it is important to be mindful. As any pet owner can attest to this, your animal has the tendency to be in the last place you might expect. So when you are moving around your house, look for your dog or cat to avoid tripping over them. The same advice of mindfulness can apply to carrying your child. Physical therapists recommend holding your child in front of you instead of by your side. By making this minor change, you can avoid strains and bad posture.
