Sprains and Strains

We all know how inconvenient and painful a sprain or strain can be when trying to perform everyday activities. At Madison Physical Therapy in Bay Ridge, New York our physical therapist do their best to help you get better fast. The first thing to know is that sprains and strains are very different. A sprain is an injury that is related to a ligament when it is torn or stretched. A strain on the other hand is an injury that is related to a muscle or tendon being torn or stretched. In Bay Ridge our physical therapists have treated sprains and strains that were caused by many things such as

  • Twisting
  • Falling
  • Getting hit
  • Strains
  • Recent Injury
  • Overstressing the Muscles
  • Lifting Heavy Objects

Most commonly sprains occur in the ankles, hands, and wrists. This is usually because if a person falls for instance on their ankle they could sprain the ligament. Whereas most strains occur in the hamstrings, hands and arms. Hamstring injuries are usually due to a person playing a sport where they can move something the wrong way or overstress the muscle which could cause a strain. Madison Physical Therapy in Bay Ridge usually see’s patients suffering from a sprain or strain from these symptoms :

  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Not being able to use the joint

  • Pain
  • Muscle Spasms
  • Muscle Weakness
  • Swelling
  • Cramping
  • Trouble moving the muscle

Our physical therapists in Bay Ridge recommend that if you are suffering from a sprain or strain a major key to a fast recovery is keeping weight off the area and icing the area on and off every 20 minutes. However, keeping weight off of the area does not mean to stop strengthening the muscle. Also it is important to elevate the injury on a pillow in order to alleviate some of the pressure and swelling from the area. After swelling and pain have become less intense it is important to begin physical therapy which will help with strengthening, range of motion, mobility and pain.
