Nerve Entrapments

Nerves are vital components of the human body as they serve to direct and deliver messages produced by the brain to other areas of the body. Sometimes, however, nerves can become compressed or pinched, causing pain and discomfort. Compression may be caused by a variety of factors, including:

  • Repetitive motions

  • Holding your body in one position for a long period of time

Compression may also occur when the nerve is pressed between ligaments, tendons and bones. Symptoms of nerve compression often vary, based on what nerve is being affected, however, some common symptoms include:

  • Pain

  • Numbness

  • “Pins and needles” and/or burning sensations

  • Tingling

  • Paresthesia

  • Weakness and atrophy

  • Recurrent skin ulcerations

  • Dry, thin, hairless skin

  • Thickened, ridged, cracked nails

While these symptoms may not appear too threatening or alarming, if left undiagnosed or untreated, nerve entrapments may lead to carpal tunnel syndrome, tennis elbow, peripheral neuropathy and other serious conditions.

In most cases, symptoms will subside upon resting the affected area and avoiding activities that worsen the affected area. Sometimes, however, symptoms persist or worsen and medical intervention becomes necessary. Upon diagnosis, doctors may prescribe a variety of treatment options depending on the severity of the case. Common treatment options include:

  • Narcotics

  • Steroid injections

  • Splints

  • NSAIDs (aspirin/ibuprofen)

  • Oral corticosteroids

  • Physical therapy

  • Surgery

Surgery is commonly used as a last resort option if all other treatment options fail, or it is used if the case is extremely severe or deemed an emergency.
