Staying Healthy This Winter
Now that we are in the winter season, we know how difficult it can be to stay active and healthy. Our physical therapist in Bay Ridge here at Madison Physical Therapy encourages you to have a positive mindset and get off that comfy couch and take some extra steps to stay healthy. We have a few tips that we believe can help you this winter.
- When temperatures drop, so does our immune system. You are more likely to catch a cold or virus when your immune system is weak so it is important to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
- Make sure you are staying hydrated and drinking lots of fluids and taking your daily vitamins.
- We know we can get lazy at times and fast food may be the easiest way to grab a meal when it is cold outside, but do not rely on it. Eat foods that are rich in vitamin C to help boost your immune system. Fruits and vegetables such as oranges, lemons, broccoli, and tomatoes are full of vitamin C. Make sure your diet is also full of meats, fish, whole grains, low-fat dairy, and vegetables as well.
- We know how nice it is to relax at home when it’s cold outside, but it is important to exercise regularly during the winter. Set a workout schedule to be completed every week. These workouts can be done in your gym or even in the comfort of your home. Set a plan to work out four or more days a week for at least 20 minutes a day. Include a cardio workout as well as light weightlifting and stretches into your workout plan.
