Torn Rotator Cuffs and How to Recover
What is a rotator cuff?
A torn rotator cuff is a very common injury, especially among adults. Our physical therapy near Bay Ridge has the tools you need to fully recover. Before learning about an injury, it is important to understand the part of the body itself. Your shoulder is made up of three bones:
- Upper arm bone (humerus)
- >Shoulder blade (scapula)
- Collarbone (clavicle)
Your rotator cuff’s job is to keep your arm in your shoulder socket. The cuff itself is composed of four muscles that keep your humerus attached to your shoulder blade. What happens when it gets torn?
When one or more of the tendons that are attached to your humerus gets torn, it can be very painful. There are two main types of tears that occur when one tears their rotator cuff:
- Partial Tear: Also known as an incomplete tear, this partially damages the tendon.
- Full-Thickness Tear: Regarded as a complete tear, this tear is a full separation of the tendon from the bone.
The two types of tears are degenerative and injury caused.
How to Recover

- Avoid activities that strain your shoulder

- This will reattach your tendon to your humerus. Surgery is not an ideal treatment but is necessary in some cases.
